Enhancing Water Security in the Automotive Industry

AIAG’s Commitment to Water Security

AIAG is at the forefront of promoting sustainable water use within the automotive industry. Our dedicated work group, following the insights from the Automotive Water Benchmark [ES-1], is committed to developing strategies and tools to ensure that the industry leads with innovation and responsibility in water management.

Understanding Water Security

Water security involves ensuring sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development, for preserving ecosystems, and for guarding against water-borne pollution and water-related disasters. In the context of the automotive industry, it translates into managing the water footprint across the entire supply chain, from production to end-of-life vehicle management.

The Automotive Industry's Impact on Water Resources

The automotive industry is a significant consumer of water, utilizing vast amounts for everything from metal fabrication and painting to cooling and air conditioning systems. With each step requiring water, the potential impact on water resources is substantial. Our work group seeks to mitigate these impacts through identifying innovative water management practices to create a sustainable future.
