Molding | CQI-23

Developed in collaboration with industry experts from OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and molding suppliers, the AIAG CQI-23 Special Process: Molding System Assessment provides a common approach to a plastic molding management system for automotive production and service part organizations.

It’s designed to help parts manufacturers improve the quality and reliability of molded components, the document includes guidelines for Process Control and Testing Equipment, along with Part Inspection and Testing.

The CQI-23 Molding System Assessment is applicable to the following processes used in the production of automotive components:

  • Injection Molding
  • Blow Molding
  • Vacuum Forming
  • Compression Molding (SMC)
  • Resin Transfer Molding
  • Extrusion

Key Components of the AIAG CQI-23 Process:

  • Process Audits: Regular assessments of molding processes to identify areas of improvement and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintaining comprehensive records of molding processes, including setup, maintenance, and inspection reports.
  • Process Control and Monitoring: Implementing systems for continuous monitoring and control of molding parameters to maintain process stability and product quality.
  • Training and Competency: Ensuring that personnel involved in the molding process are adequately trained and competent in their roles.
  • Defect Prevention and Corrective Actions: Establishing procedures for identifying, analyzing, and correcting defects in molded parts, as well as implementing preventive measures to avoid recurrence.

Benefits to Parts Manufacturers:

  • Improved Product Quality: Enhanced consistency and reliability of molded components, leading to fewer defects and higher customer satisfaction.
  • Increased Efficiency: Streamlined processes and better control over molding operations, resulting in reduced waste and lower production costs.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements, reducing the risk of non-compliance issues.
  • Enhanced Supplier Relationships: Building trust and credibility with automotive OEMs and other stakeholders by demonstrating a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • Competitive Advantage: Gaining an edge over competitors by consistently delivering high-quality molded parts, which can lead to increased business opportunities and market share.

The CQI-23 process enhances the quality, efficiency, and compliance of molded components, leading to improved product reliability, reduced production costs, and stronger supplier relationships.
